A new Venture Studio network is seeking an experienced entrepreneurial leader to join their team. This full-time, flexible position is based in Salt Lake City, Austin, Miami, and other locations.

OVERVIEW

Seeking an entrepreneurial business leader to manage the development and successful operation of a venture studio. The Palm Venture Studios network is backed financially and operationally by an active family investment office with a superb track record of acquiring underperforming businesses and pivoting them to a more disruptive strategy, as well as launching startups from the idea stage.

OUR CLIENT  


Palm Venture Studios network is building 9 Venture Studios in economic opportunity zones across the U.S. Each Venture Studio will recruit and support promising entrepreneurs and seasoned execs to build and launch up to 8 new companies per year as well as help source and acquire underperforming companies to turnaround with the support of the network. Palm Venture Studios will provide companies with shared resources in functional areas (strategy, accounting, HR, funding, tech, finance, recruiting, marketing, etc), methods, ideas, and an extensive network.


Palm Venture Studios and opportunity zone funds backing them are sponsored by an active family office which has acquired or started 65 companies since 1992, 30 of which were add-on acquisitions to existing platform companies. Of the 35 platform companies, 18 have been sold for 21 times the capital invested.


ROLE


The Managing Partner (MP) of each Venture Studio will catalyze an ecosystem of startups, experts, advisors and strategic corporate and financial partners in their region who work together to deploy new business models in major sectors of the U.S. economy. The MP will oversee ideation, sourcing, and selection of new business concepts with large addressable markets as well as scout for underperforming businesses to acquire and help turnaround. In addition, the MP will help recruit management teams to launch and grow each business, build boards of industry experts, and tap into their and the family office’s networks to find seasoned veterans, promising entrepreneurs, and high performing specialist talent.


Accountabilities:  

  • Work directly with family office to help develop the venture studio’s themes, areas of focus, and methodologies.

  • Rapidly evaluate concepts across multiple industries and confidently and collaboratively make go/no-go calls with the investment committee.

  • Oversee projects to identify market opportunities, create new venture concepts, and develop go-to-market strategies for the concepts.

  • Help recruit, develop, manage, and scale a well-rounded, diverse team by attracting and mentoring extraordinary people. This applies to the companies in your portfolio, and (over time) to your studio itself.

  • Activate community connections and collaborations, to make the most of the local entrepreneurial talent.

  • Responsible for overseeing the overall day-to-day Studio operations.


CANDIDATE


This role is ideal for an experienced, entrepreneurial business leader who is excited about ideating, validating, and developing multiple businesses simultaneously. The ideal candidate is an experienced entrepreneur or operating executive who has developed and launched startups, is disruptive by nature, and possesses strong managerial skills, in addition to excellent judgment and a bias for action.


Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of entrepreneurial/venture management work experience, with demonstrated experience recruiting and managing high-performing teams.

  • Expertise in entrepreneurship, innovation and venture building.

  • Preferably, investment experience at the seed stage as a VC, angel, or through an accelerator.

  • Proven capabilities in “applied strategy” i.e. systematically roadmapping operations to create momentum around ideas.

  • Exceptional ability to communicate, both written and verbally.

  • Innately curious, kind, and a growth-mindset.

  • An entrepreneurial thinker with an appetite to take on a high level of responsibility commensurate with anticipated rewards.

  • Excellent professional references and high integrity.


COMPENSATION


The target compensation for this role is $250K plus benefits and substantial equity in the Venture Studio, companies started or acquired in your studio, and companies built in other Venture Studios in the network (up to 9 studios). For the MP, this equity package translates into ownership in potentially as many as 80 companies started across the network. In sum, the compensation package is heavily geared toward equity ownership.
