The Client seeks to transform infrastructure through technology. The company holds, operates, and invests in advanced infrastructure projects, as well as the technology companies applying innovations to enable those projects. Their investors include Alphabet Inc. (Google’s parent company) and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (a large and deeply experienced infrastructure investor). The Company believes in technology’s ability to make infrastructure more sustainable, intelligent, and efficient.

Description of Position: Head of External Affairs & ESG

The Head of External Affairs & ESG will have overall responsibility to develop and lead the company’s firm wide communications strategy and establish the company’s brand positioning to internal and external stakeholders as well as further develop and systematize, and effectively communicate, the company’s unique approach to ESG.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

External Affairs
  • Develop and drive the company’s firm wide communications strategy that will lead initiatives to strengthen marketing and communications, foster strategic partnerships, and expand relationships with policy makers, industry leaders, investors and other key stakeholders
  • Proactively seek out and identify key media opportunities and coordinate strategies and tactics to promote and protect the integrity of the company and their mission
  • Manage the company’s relationship with our external press agency and ensure consistent messaging in marketing and press materials, RFPs, and certifications, raising the profile and understanding of the firm’s capabilities and businesses
  • Create and manage a solid network of strategic partnerships and alliances in support of the company’s key priorities
  • Translate ideas and insights into actionable programs, initiatives and thought leadership with specific and measurable outcomes
  • Assist senior management in developing internal and external communications including presentations, speeches, and other press-related materials
ESG
  • Develop the firm’s ESG investment framework and establish the company as a thought leader in the ESG space.
  • Track ESG-related developments from a market, regulatory, and thematic perspective, and work with the executive leadership and transactional teams in formulating strategies to adapt accordingly
  • Analyze and constantly improve ways of accessing and applying ESG data while investigating potential new sources of such information for the firm’s overall strategy
  • Partner with the transactional professionals in developing proprietary ESG and sustainability- related thought leadership. Fully integrate ESG into the company’s thematic process
  • Connect and develop visibility and presence on behalf of the company in the PE ESG community, including active dialogues with other heads of ESG across the PE industry
  • Support the team in clearly articulating each team’s ESG approach to our Board and operating companies
  • Interface with peers, industry groups, and other external ESG organizations. Attend conferences, including speaking on ESG matters, and produce articles on areas of ESG focus
  • Lead the development of an annual impact report detailing the economic, social, and environmental impact produced by the company’s innovation platforms, which quantifies such impact wherever possible


Requirements

  • 7-10 years of experience in corporate communications developing and implementing effective and cohesive firm wide strategies
  • A background knowledge in the field of sustainable investing and a passion for the company’s mission and belief in the potential for technology to improve infrastructure
  • Bachelor Degree required; Advanced degree (MBA, PhD or similar) preferred
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex ideas and concepts at a level of detail adapted to the sophistication level of the audience
  • Creative, strategic thinker, with a demonstrated record of accomplishment of both developing and executing successful integrated campaigns
  • Ability to coordinate efforts of various teams in order to present a coherent message and offer sound media relations advice to senior leadership
  • A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment
  • Have a deep understanding of third party ESG data and research
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, with strong work ethic and high degree of self-motivation
  • Must embrace a “firm first” mentality, be consistently rigorous in producing quality work products, foster internal collaboration, and embrace accountability to outcomes
